Sleep Lab
The Sleep Lab at Highland Community Hospital is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Specially trained physicians diagnose and treat patients experiencing sleep disorders.
Prior to the sleep study, an initial evaluation is conducted by a Sleep Lab physicians. The evaluation includes a physical exam and review of your medical history. Patients are also asked to complete an extensive sleep questionnaire. If the physician believes that you could benefit from studies in the Sleep Lab, an appointment will be scheduled for you. You will be given a tour of the facilities and an explanation of the procedures prior to the day or night of your appointment.
During sleep testing, the activities that go on in your body during sleep (brain waves, muscle movements, eye movements, breathing through your mouth and nose, snoring, heart rate and leg movements) are monitored by electrodes applied to your head and skin. A clip on your index finger or earlobe monitors the level of oxygen in your blood. Your sleep may also be videotaped for later review of any abnormalities observed during the study. None of these devices are painful and all are designed to be as comfortable as possible.
Highland's Sleep Lab is located in the East Wing. Testing may be done overnight or during the day on an outpatient basis. Admission to the Sleep Lab for testing is by a physician's order only.
